Mike Rose’s Back to School: Why Everyone Deserves a Second Chance at Education

Among the dozens of books each year calling for reform of American schools or higher education, Mike Rose’s book stands out by focusing on an education “market” that receives surprisingly little attention, the “more than 10 million students in community colleges, and especially in adult school academic and vocational programs” (9). Rose’s primary concern here is with the adult learner, the woman or man who failed or was failed by the instruction provided in public school systems but has come to realize that further formal training is essential to a decent chance in life.
