John R. Searle is Slusser Professor of Philosophy at the University of California, Berkeley. He was educated at the universities of Wisconsin and Oxford, where he was a Rhodes Scholar. He has all of his degrees, B.A., M.A. and D.Phil., from Oxford and taught there as a lecturer for three years before moving to Berkeley in 1959. He is the author of six- teen books and over a hundred articles. His work has been translated into 21 languages. Among his many awards are five honorary doctorate degrees, and he was just awarded the National Medal for the Humanities.
