World-renowned literary critic René Girard was the first Andrew B. Hammond Professor of French Language, Literature, and Civilization at Stanford University and is currently Professor of French Emeritus (active) there. He is the author of many books, including Deceit, Desire, and the Novel (1965); Violence and the Sacred (1977); The Scapegoat (1986); Things Hidden since the Foundation of the World (1987); and I See Satan Fall Like Lightning (2001).
