The Great Recession was officially declared over in June 2009, but the number of people in poverty has continued to rise—reaching 46.2 million in 2010—and is expected to increase further, despite the ongoing economic recovery. Recent declines in the unemployment rate are mainly attributable to people giving up on the job search, and of those still looking, one-third, more than four million people, have been unemployed for over a year. As unemployment insurance benefits expire, the ranks of the “new poor” will likely swell in the years ahead.
