The upsurge of public interest in political Islam over the past two decades has generated a great many books, most of limited value and a fair number of questionable sanity. Among the really excellent scholars who have contributed to this literature, however, nobody comes close to olivier Roy, who is currently a professor at the European university Institute in Florence. Any work of his on the relationship between culture, religion, and politics demands respectful attention.
