We’re Hiring—Associate Editor

The Hedgehog Review (THR) seeks a full-time Associate Editor to join the staff of our award-winning journal. The Associate Editor reports directly to the Editor and works closely with the Managing Editor and the Circulation Manager. As a member of THR staff, the Associate Editor would also be able to participate in seminars, online events, social gatherings, and other events hosted by our publisher, the Institute for Advanced Studies in Culture.

The candidate will have prior editorial experience, including line editing, editing for house style, structure, and argument. The candidate should also be an accomplished writer with a solid understanding of grammar, syntax, and some familiarity with the Chicago Manual of Style. In addition, the candidate should be familiar with web features (writing and editing) and social media, including analytics, posting, and promoting THR issues and events. The candidate should also be familiar with email newsletter tools such as Mailchimp. A basic familiarity with content management systems and website management and upkeep is also desirable.

THR’s office is located in Charlottesville, Virginia, on the grounds of the University of Virginia. The position is based in the Charlottesville office, although a hybrid working arrangement may be possible.

The Associate Editor’s duties would include:

• Commissioning essays, including discussing concept, providing word count and deadline, and gaining author approval of final drafts;
• Editing essays both on the macro level (structure, argument) and the micro (line editing);
• Participating in theme development by proposing future themes and authors;
• Editing the book review section (finding new titles, suggesting authors, commissioning and editing reviews);
• Participating in issue production, including art/photography selection and proofing;
• Preparing and uploading content for the website (print issue and web features);
• In collaboration with the editor, commissioning and editing web features for hedgehogreview.com;
• Running social media accounts (X/Twitter, Facebook) and monitoring Google Analytics and Plausible Analytics;
• Composing, editing, and posting weekly newsletters as well as additional newsletters during issue launch;
• Developing and maintaining a network of authors who might be invited to contribute to THR;
• Planning and occasionally hosting online Zoom events;
• Working with the staff on other projects such as marketing campaigns and preparing board meeting materials.
